STANDARD DEFINITIONS

     Below are some simple definition of terms used in our disability insurance policies. We hope you will find this information helpful:

  • Own Occupation

    The substantial and material duties of an Insured’s regular occupation as shown on the Schedule page their Hanleigh Policy.

  • Temporary Total Disability

    If an insured suffers an accident or illness that temporarily precludes return to work, this type of coverage provides corresponding benefit payments. Policies typically begin payment of monthly benefits after a pre-determined elimination period*. Benefits continue while the insured remains disabled, or until the coverage benefit period ends.

  • Permanent Total Disability

    This level of disability applies when an accident or illness is so severe it precludes the insured from ever returning to his or her own occupation. Also known as, “career-ending disability” this coverage is intended to replace both present and future income with a lump sum benefit

  • Elimination Period

    The period of time during which the insured must be continuously disabled before benefits may be payable.

  • Recurring Disability

    If an Insured returns to work but has not continuously performed all of their regular duties of their Own Occupation* for a continuous period of at least six (6) months, any subsequent period of Total Disability* shall be deemed a continuation of the prior disability.

  • Presumptive Disability

    Insured presumed Totally Disabled* if they have completely lost one of the following:

  1. use of both hands/both feet/one hand & one foot,
  2. sight in both eyes,
  3. hearing in both ears, or
  4. the ability to speak

The Elimination Period* is then waived and regular medical care will not be required for the covered monthly benefits to be paid up to the maximum benefit period.

  • Pre-existing Condition
  1. A condition for which medical advice or treatment was recommended by or received from a physician or
  2. symptoms were present that would cause a reasonably prudent person to seek advice or treatment from a physician.
  • Earnings

    Gross earned income, less business expenses, but before any other deductions; includes salaries, wages, fees, commissions, bonuses, business profits or other payments for personal services. Does not include unearned income from savings, investments, or real estate property.

  • Physician

    A legally licensed practitioner of the healing arts acting within the scope of their license and that is not the insured, a member of the insured’s immediate family or a person residing with the insured.

  • Transplant Benefit

    If after the Certificate has been in force for 6 months, the insured gives a part of his or her body to another person, the condition will be deemed a Sickness*. Disability benefits are paid in the same way as for any other covered sickness.
